Project: Describing physical activity behaviour in middle-aged and older Canadian women and men: An analysis of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA)

Role: Public member advisory committee

Lead researcher: Marla Beauchamp, Associate Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Science, McMaster University and Cassandra D’Amore, PhD candidate, School of Rehabilitation Science, McMaster University

Project overview: We are using data already collected from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) (approximately 51,000 Canadians) to describe the physical activity behaviour of men and women 45-85 years old. Specifically, we will be discussing the results with our committee on:

  1. Describing the usual amount, types, and intensities of physical activity completed by different age, sex, and socioeconomic groups
  2. Examining relationships between personal and environmental factors and physical activity in the Canadian population stratified by age and sex

What is the engagement opportunity?

We are looking for 6-8 individuals to advise/consult on the output from our proposed research, which will focus on physical activity in middle-aged and older individuals. Specifically, we hope to reflect on the design and content of the questionnaire used to capture physical activity, what our results mean to you and what information would be meaningful to share with the pubic.

Who is eligible for this engagement opportunity?

  • People 45 years and older
  • People of any activity level or experience are welcome!
  • No experience on advisory committees needed
  • No knowledge or experience of physical activity needed

Why get involved?

  • Learn what physical activity means and why it is important for healthy aging
  • Learn how much activity you should be doing, what is normal, and what other people are doing
  • Members will be compensated for their time

What is the expected commitment?

  • Attend two to three 90-minute meetings over the next year
  • Share your thoughts about and experiences with physical activity
  • Work with our team to identify key messages from our research to share with the public
  • There will be occasional readings or small tasks between/before meetings
  • This is an advisory role (not a research participant)

Compensation: $40 Visa gift following each meeting you attend
