About this event
Advancing the understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion has come to the forefront as a major issue in our society. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified existing inequities, including age-based biases, amongst other discriminatory and racially motivated rhetoric. While current and emerging researchers in the fields of health and aging can play a critical role when it comes to creating a more inclusive and just society, it is important they have the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to do so.
Join us, in partnership with the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA), at our virtual Collaborative Conversation with Dr. Brenda Vrkljan, professor, School of Rehabilitation Science and scientific co-lead of the McMaster Collaborative for Health and Aging, and project partners from the iAM Human Conversation eXchange.
Together, with project partners, Dr. Vrkljan will outline a proposed teaching and learning platform coined ‘the iAM Human Conversation eXchange.’ This platform aims to grow awareness about aging, intersectionality, and cultural humility. With a beta version of the iAM Human platform piloted in January 2023, the objectives of this collaborative conversation are:
1) Learn some of the key concepts that underly Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives
2) Explore the challenges and benefits of implementing this type of teaching & learning platform
3) Consider ways this platform can be used and improved to advance inclusivity in health and aging research
Reflecting Together will take place immediately following this live webinar at 1:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for community members to come together and share their thoughts on the topics discussed during this event. We hope you will be able to join as we continue the conversation and take our learnings into action.
This work is supported by funding from the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging at McMaster University and the Institute of Aging, Canadian Institutes for Health Research. Funding has also been provided by the MacPherson Institute for Teaching and Learning at McMaster University.
